Hedviga Golik, who was born in 1924, was watching her black-and-white television while lounging in her beloved recliner.
Woman found dead after 42 years in front of TV
According to Croatian authorities, she was last seen by her neighbours in 1966, when she would have been 42 years old.
Her neighbours imagined she had moved out of her apartment in Croatia’s capital, Zagreb.
Police and bailiffs, who had broken into the apartment to help the authorities figure out who owned it, were the ones who eventually found her.
A police spokeswoman stated, “So far, we have no idea how someone who was officially reported missing so long ago was not located previously in the same flat she used to live in.”
“Officers who went there said it was like entering into a time capsule.”
“The cup she’d been drinking tea from remained on a table next to the chair she’d been sitting in, and the house was filled with artefacts that no one had seen in decades.
“Even if there were a few cobwebs, nothing had been moved in decades.”
The neighbours were taken aback by the discovery.
Hedvig “disappeared” when Jadranka Markic was nine years old.
“I recall her,” she said. She was a quiet woman who kept to herself while remaining polite. We were all under the impression she had simply moved out and gone to live with relatives.”
